Job Description:
Description Become a Reading Assist Fellow and spend a school
year of service working with struggling readers. With your help,
one more child can embark on a path to success in reading. Please
note that we will not be able to move forward with your application
until we receive your resume. What will I do? Reading Assist is
seeking fellows to serve in an elementary school to provide reading
instruction to students in kindergarten through fifth grade who
face significant reading challenges. Fellows teach foundational
reading skills to students who struggle to read through traditional
classroom education. Fellows work with up to 6-18 students for
30-45 minutes each day (1:1 or 2:1 sessions) and are supported by a
Program Manager for support and feedback, as well as biweekly
visits at your school. The Reading Assist Fellowship, an AmeriCorps
program, requires 900 service hours for part-time Fellows to be
completed between August 24, 2026, and June 30, 2027 . Fellows
begin with four weeks of full-time, graduate-level training and
then are embedded into high-needs elementary schools. Fellows
transform the lives of students who struggle with foundational
reading skills. Expectations: We seek passionate, capable tutors
willing to serve the students and the community. You do not need
teaching experience, but you must be ready to commit to students
for one school year. Reading Assist Fellows must be willing to:
Commit to a school year of service from August 24, 2026, to June
30, 2027 , serving Monday-Friday from approximately 8:00 a.m.-1:00
p.m. or Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday from approximately 8:00
a.m.-3:30 p.m. in a Reading Assist partner school.* Attend the
4-weeks in-person training starting on August 24, 2026, that runs
Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 3:30 pm Throughout training you will be
required to pass assessments and complete homework as assigned.
Work with children in K-5, including children who may have
behavioral challenges in addition to academic needs. Become an
integral member of the AmeriCorps community and participate in all
AmeriCorps trainings, events, and projects. Attend all Reading
Assist training sessions and events. Teach students in schools
according to the Reading Assist Intervention program. Prepare
lesson plans tailored to the individual needs of the student. Work
with a Program Manager to provide individualized instruction. Meet
with a Program Manager regularly to discuss the implementation of
intervention and student progress. Monitor student progress and
input data. Communicate with Program Manager, school liaisons, and
Reading Assist staff members in a timely and professional manner.
Maintain records as required, including student attendance and
AmeriCorps hours. Become an integral member of the school
community. Engage in peer-to-peer outreach, attend recruitment
fairs alongside Reading Assist staff to share about their
experience as a Fellow as part of professional development.
*Fellows follow their assigned school’s schedule, including school
breaks and holidays. Qualifications Reading Assist Fellows should
exhibit the following competencies: Be able to blend, segment, and
manipulate sounds within words Show an interest in literacy,
education, and community service Demonstrate resilience,
adaptability, and professionalism Maintain a patient and flexible
mindset Be open to constructive feedback Complete an AmeriCorps
application Submit to background checks and fingerprinting Must be
responsive to emails and other communications Be a U.S. citizen or
permanent resident alien Have completed a college degree
(preferred) Must be proficient in or prepared to learn Google
Drive, Zoom, PowerPoint, and email Must have a computer (laptop,
